PAXTON – Marian Louise Vogel, 93, of Paxton died at 3:50 p.m. Friday (June 24, 2011) at the Illinois Knights Templar Home of Paxton, where she had been a resident for the past six years.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 30, at the First United Methodist Church, 210 West Center St., Paxton, with the Rev. Terry L. Westerfield officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cemetery, Paxton.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, at Baier Family Funeral Services, 406 East Pells St., Paxton, and at the church Thursday one hour before the funeral service.

Marian was born Dec. 1, 1917, in Chicago, the daughter of Lewis Henry and Harriet Bernice Cooley Osborn. She married Raymond A. Vogel June 5, 1955, at the Rankin United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death Oct. 13, 1993.

She is survived by one daughter, Grace (Stanley) Hornsby of Rantoul; two granddaughters, Melissa (Matthew) Quinn of Kansas City, Mo., and Jessica (Darren) Comstock of Rantoul; five great-grandchildren, Mikaela and Leilani Quinn, Tyrin and Jace Hulbert and Trinity Comstock; a brother-in-law, Ralph (Rita) Vogel of Rankin, two sisters-in-law, Ruth Henneinke of Redding, Calif., and Dorothy Diskin of Oceanside, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son who was stillborn, John Vogel; two sisters, Dorothy Osborn and Harriett Osborn, and a brother, Lewis A. "Bud" Osborn.

Marian grew up in the Chicago area, where she attended Gallistel Elementary School and graduated from James H. Bowen High School. After graduation she worked at the Spiegel Mail Order House and Wilson & Co. Meat Packers, both of Chicago.

She then served in the U. S. Navy from October 1944 to August 1946. At the time of her discharge she was a Storekeeper First Class.

In 1949 Marian received her Bachelor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago, in 1951 she received her Bachelor of Science in Education, in 1952 she received her Master of Education and in 1956 she received her Advance Certificate in Education, all from the University of Illinois. After her education, she taught in several East Central Illinois schools, including Rankin, Paxton and Potomac.

She and her husband lived in rural Rankin before moving to rural Paxton in 1977. In 1995 she moved to Prairie Village in Rantoul and in 2005 she moved back to Paxton.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Paxton, the United Methodist Women and the Anti-Can't Circle of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association and the Get Together Club in Rankin.

Marian's faith was a very important part of her life. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, winning stuffed animals at bingo to give to her great grandchildren and most importantly, her family and their visits.

Memorials may be made to the Illinois Knights Templar Home, First United Methodist Church of Paxton or an organization of the donor's choice.
