Edna was born in 1922 to a Swedish father Ernest Gustav Bergman, and a local English mother Emma Joyce. (They were married in 1919).

Edna, at 16, suffered the loss of both of her parents within months of each other in 1938,and as a way of comfort for their loss she and her older brother, Ernest, both went into the armed services. Edna into the WAAF's and Ernest in the Merchant Navy.

Sadly Ernest died, aged 20, when his ship, the S.S. Empire Crossbill, was torpedoed while in Convoy C-42 by a German U-boat U-82 on September 11 1941.

Edna was so distraught she had to be sedated as Ernest was the only thing that she had left in the world up until then. In 1949 Edna met and married George Edmund 'Ted' Richardson who had also been in the forces as a seaman. They were married at Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England.

Edna was living in Silver Street, Hartlepool from then on, in a double-shared accommodation, before moving to the picturesque Rossmere part of town (Pickering Grove). The house is still there now but slightly renovated.

Every year without fail she put an entry in the Roll of Honour listings in the local newspaper for Ernest. She once said that to visit the Tower Hill Memorial would have been too much for her to bear but managed to lay a wreath on Remembrance Sunday in Hartlepool at the war memorial each year until failing health in the 1990's.

In later years, following her beloved husband, Ted's death, Edna loved socialising in her local cafe, drinking tea, and had a nice circle of friends.

Edna sadly passed away from lung cancer in 1996 and was buried with her husband Ted (who died in 1974) at Stranton cemetery.
