Afterwards, he attended Kalamazoo College, in Michigan, before beginning what would be a nearly 64 year career in the newspaper business.
Bill began his newspaper career at The Elkhart Truth (Ind.) from 1947-1968, starting off as a sports reporter, police and city court reporter, sports and news editor and, finally, city editor. From 1968-1972, he was the managing editor of The Daily Times (Ottawa, Ill.), before purchasing the Oconto County Reporter.

In September 1992, he sold the newspaper to Denmark, Wisconsin-based Brown County Publishing, but he continued as general manager, editor and ad salesman. Borneman stayed on to run the paper after Gannett acquired the Oconto County Reporter from Brown County Publishing in July 2004. He continued working until a few weeks before his death. Bill was an avid tennis player and runner. He organized the Oconto tennis tournament. He enjoyed following University of Michigan football and Oconto High School sports.
