John R. Westhoff, 82, of Walnut, died at 10:30 pm., Sunday, Nov. 13, 1994, at his residence in Walnut.

He was born Sept. 15,1912 at Clovis, N.M., the son of Frank and Maggie Trainor Westhoff. He moved with his family to Walnut in 1915. He graduated from Walnut High School in 1933.

He married Martha Riley. She preceded him in death in 1941. He married Lorraine Norris Feb. 25, 1946, in St. Patrick's Church in Walnut. She survives of the home.

He worked as an equipment operator during construction of the Army Ammunition Plant at Parsons. He also worked on the construction of the Alcon Highway in Alaska.

He served as a tail gunner in the European Theater during W.W.II.

Mr. Westhoff worked as a equipment operator for the W.J. "Red" Fox Construction Co. of Girard before opening Westhoff Construction Co. in Walnut in 1958. he later worked in soil conservation and road construction for Beachner's Construction Co. in St. Paul. He retired in 1981.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Walnut and a fourth degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus.

He was a member of the Walnut Fire Department for 52 years and served as Fire Chief from 1956 until June of 1994.

He was a member of the Gard Lee Post No. 292, American Legion of Walnut and the Walnut Ruritan. Surviving in addition to his wife, Lorraine Westhoff, of the home is six sons: Bernard Westhoff, Wichita; John "Jack" Westhoff, Mexia, Texas; Tom Westhoff, Parsons; Clarke Westhoff, Walnut; Dennis Westhoff, St. Paul; Scott Westhoff, St. Paul; six daughters, Ginger Sowers, Eden, N.C.; Jeanie Mahurin, Girard; Margaret Jurgens, Purcell, Okla., Ruth McDonald, Coulumbus; Charlotte Westhoff, Walnut; and Kerry
Volmer, St. Paul; 27 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lawrence Westhoff, Bremerton, Wa; and one sister, Juanita Fox, Girard.

He was proceeded in death by two sons, Ron Westhoff, Jan. 3, 1973 and Bill Westhoff, April 10,1992; one brother, Verdan Westhoff, April 1961; and one sister,Gertrude Westhoff. Funeral Mass for John R. Westhoff was held Wednesday, Nov. 16, at St Patrick's Catholic Church in Walnut with Msgr. Vincent Hogan officiating, Fr. Leo Kerschen assisted Msgr. Hogan with the funeral Mass. Burial was in St. Patrick's Cemetery at Walnut. Graveside Military Rites were conducted by the Gard Lee Post No. 292, American Legion of Walnut. The Smith-Carson Wall Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
