The son of Joel Griffing & Sarah Fairchild, he married twice - first to Lavina Fowler and they had five children together: Charlotte (b-1823); Catherine (b-1826 m-Pratt); Lavinia (b-1828); Joel Lewis (b-1831); and Harvey (b-1839). He was remarried to Betsey M. Trowbridge after 1855. He was a farmer in Bridgewater Twp. & New Milford, Penna.
