Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was mustered in as a Private in Company F, 88th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on September 14, 1861. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery in action on June 18, 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia. His citation reads simply "Distinguished bravery in action; was severely wounded." Mustered out on September 14, 1864 after serving a full three years in the field, his Medal was awarded to him on April 30, 1892, nearly 28 years later. He was one of four soldiers from the 88th Pennsylvania to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the others being 1st Sergeant Edward L. Gilligan of Company E, 1st Lieutenant Sylvester H. Martin of Company K, and 1st Sergeant William Sands of Company G).
