She was the daughter of James McIlhany (1797-1867) and Margaret Henderson McIlhany.
On December 11, 1850 as Orra M. McIlhany, she married George W. Carter at Loudoun County, Virginia.
They were the parents of six children.
Per the Alexandria Gazette published Monday, May 6, 1872, in May 1872, she was granted a divorce from her husband, Colonel George W. Carter of New Orleans. In a private letter sent to her by her husband in February 1872, he requested a divorce. The court ordered his interest in a farm in Loudon County to be given to his wife and children for their support.
On the 1880 Census for Hamilton, Loudoun County, Virginia, her marital status is Divorced.
