Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in the Union Army in Troop F, 22d Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on September 11, 1863 near Moorefield, West Virginia. His citation reads "Voluntarily crossed a branch of the Potomac River under fire to rescue a wounded comrade held prisoner by the enemy. Was wounded and taken prisoner in the attempt."
