The proper full given name may be John Ross Archibald, but will use the "Ross Archibald" on this memorial that is found in his obituary and cemetery listings.

First married to a Mary Reed Archibald*, assuming in the 1890's sometime, but exact marriage date and location not yet found or determined. They had at least three natural born children together: John, Guy, and Goldie. The obituary for Goldie published in 1920 indicates that the mother, Mary, had health problems and sometime after Goldie's birth in 1901 Goldie was allowed to live with an aunt, who later adopted Goldie (Goldie May Anderson , adopted daughter of Charles and Cora Belle Archibald Anderson). Guy Archibald died in 1916, and John lived until 1959. Presumably they continued to live with Ross Archibald but frankly the details are not clear.

This wife/mother evidently died in 1905 or early 1906, but her death and burial location has yet to be found by this contributor. She isn't known to be buried in Jefferson county, and she does not show up in WPA listings for Iowa, so when she died and where buried is a mystery at this point.

John Ross Archibald/Ross Archibald married Maud Miller Archibald on July 28, 1906 at Salem, Henry county, Iowa. It is not entirely clear if Miller was her maiden name or a first married name. Am using Miller as her maiden name on her entry, but with some caution.

See the obituary for Ross Archibald for additional information about his life and family. The obituary was provided by a volunteer in respose to a query on the IaGenWeb/Linn county website; the response and providing of the obituary are greatly appreciated.

Update: a/o July 7, 2011 - * It appears from a Hartwell Munger family group sheet found in the Fairfield Public Library indicates that a "Mary Bell", born about 1873, was an adopted daughter of his. It now appears that this is the same Mary that married John Ross Archibald, but nothing else about her has yet to be found. Who her biological parents were, if she was married prior to her marriage to John Ross Archibald, and when she died and where buried remains a mystery at this point. A sibling, though not biological, was Luther Munger who is buried in Evergreen cemtery, Fairfield, Iowa. Where Hartwell Munger and either of his two wives is/are buried isn't known or recorded.
