I remember my grandfather, George L. Hawley, as a kind of gruff but yet gentle man. He liked the Milwaukee Braves and would listen to them on the radio and later on TV. He would lie on the couch with his eyes closed and you would swear he was asleep until you tried to change the station! He was a good card player and he taught my brother, Robert, how to play rummy. He taught him to hold all of his cards until he was ready to go out and this would upset grandma since she was waiting for cards to be played and grandpa or Robert would be holding them all. He wasn't the type to just give a child a nickel or quarter because they were small, only if they earned it. Grandpa also loved to fish and I remember many trips to Wisconsin for fishing trips. Grandpa was alway kind enough to put the worm on my hook for me and then take the fish off if I was lucky enough to catch one. My brother, Robert, spent his summers with grandpa and grandma and we all have loving special thoughts and memories of them.
