Velma Rachel Bobbitt Morris Sloan, 86, was born in San Augustine, TX, to the late Fonzie and Mary Esper Bobbitt. She passed from this life Monday evening after an illness.

Mrs. Sloan had lived in Pineland since 1941 and was a member of the Pineland Methodist Church. She retired from Temple Inland after serving the company for 38 years. Mrs. Sloan was active in the community; serving on the Pineland City Council for 23 years and as Mayor Pro Tem. She also served on the Sabine County Appraisal Board and had the pleasure of being Grand Marshall of the 2008 Pineland Day Parade and was over the Pineland Cemetery.

Mrs. Sloan was a hard worker and enjoyed cooking, gardening and working on her farm raising registered Black Angus cattle. Her Grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy.

She is survived by her son and his wife Ray and Paula Morris of Nacogdoches, her son-in-law Mark Jacks of Pineland, former daughter-in-law Tina Roche of Sugar Hill, GA, her brother and his wife Alvy P. and Bettie Bobbitt of Stockton, KS, her sister Mary Joy Bobbitt of Nacogdoches, and her Sisters-in-law, Donna Bobbitt of Bellevue, NE, and Sue Bobbitt of Pineland. She is also survived by her grandchildren and their spouses: Mary Alice and Rick Nethery of Pineland, Waylon Jacks of Seattle, WA, Joush and Tina Morris of Rosevine, Sam and Courtney Morris of Nacogdoches, Terri Quinn of Nacogdoches and John and Amber Quinn of Nacogdoches. Her great grandchildren: Austin, Emily, and Ethan Nethery, Hannah, Savannah, and Annah Kate Morris and Kamyrn Morris. Also numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Mrs. Sloan was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands William Willis Morris and Frank Sloan, her daughter Bonnie Jacks her brothers Alfred, Kenneth, and Billy Ray Bobbitt, her nephews Kenny and Larry Bobbitt and her great nephew Daniel Bobbitt.

Visitation will be Thursday evening, June 30, 2011, from 5:30 pm until 9:00 pm, in the Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St., Hemphill, TX. Funeral services will be Friday morning, July 1, 2011, at 10:00 am in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Pineland Cemetey.
