Mary Jane was baptized by Rev. James Given at Logan's Ferry Presbyterian Church. Rev Given was a Hastings family favorite pastor. That was in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. She and husband Andy Clements were married March 5, 1902 at Sharpsburg, Allegheny County, PA.

Mary had one child by husband Andy, Alice Stewart "Red" Clements, who never married.

She did have, however, two children by her previous marriage to John Bole Copeland, from whom she was widowed. She and John were married in 1884 at Parnassus, Allegheny County, PA. John was born in 1851 and died January 19, 1895 in Warren, Warren County, PA. He is presumably buried in New Kensington, Westmoreland County, PA. The two children of John and Mary were: Mary Louise Copeland and Archi Hope "Arch" Copeland, Sr.

There is a tragedy here, as reported in 1982 by Mary Jane Hastings Copeland Clements' daughter Alice Stewart "Red" Clements. Alice asked that the story not be told for 25 years, and that request was honored. (She retold the story in written form in 1988. Both the 1982 and 1988 reports were to her great-grand niece Ruth L. (Ollis) and Ruth's husband Rev. J. Keith Cook, whom she recognized as the family genealogists. As of 1988, Alice had never told anyone else the story, even though John's two children sometimes asked how their father and mother got along.)

Alice said, "John had serious mental troubles, was confined to an institution in Warren, PA, but was released briefly to attend his mother's funeral, during which time he stayed with his wife (my mother) and their children in their home. He got angry in the home there and shot his wife Mary twice, once in the shoulder (the bullet went clear through her body) and once in the center of her chest (that bullet was never removed). The two bullet scars remained on her chest the rest of her life. He was taken back to the institution where he later, died leaving Mary a young widow. She did not divorce him. She remarried only after John died. Some of the family had argued against having John come home for his mother's funeral but Mary, as a young sympathetic woman thought it best to have him come home for the funeral, so that is what was done. She was mistaken to do it, in spite of her well-meaning intentions."
