Carlos Marquez Villalobos passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Saturday, June 27th, 2009, after a short battle with leukemia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Alvina Villalobos; his sister, Nicki Contreras; brothers, Alfredo and Antonio. Hewas survived by his loving wife, Margaret of 60 years; his sister, Nelly Von Gunden; brother, "Shorty" and six children, Carol (Lambert) Maldonado, Carlos, Richie (Lonita), Teresa (Frank) Hurtado, Rachel Gomez and Jose. Carlos also has numerous grandchildren, Elisa and Monica Maldonado, Shonowa and Richard Villalobos, Vanessa Smith-Villalobos, Michaela (Walter) Urias, Marcela (Jamie) Fox, Marlissa (Matt) Mayberry, Frankie Hurtado, Margarete Villalobos, Rachel, Carlos and Alegria Gomez, Monique George, Nahlene (Mark) Watanabe; and great-grandchildren, Kaley and Payton Urias, Raymond, Vanessa and Anthony Navarro and Nahlene Smith.
On July 26th, 1925, he was born in Red Mountain, California, a small mining town on the way to Las Vegas. At four months old his family moved to Wilmington, where he continued to reside. He attended Banning High School, Harbor College, attended numerous seminars and took several courses in order to attain the expertise required for his Tax Consultant and Insurance Broker business that he established and maintained in Wilmington. In his younger years, Carlos was also a disc jockey and a boxing trainer at the Wilmington Bow. As a Merchant Marine, he was a proud American that served his country in WWII and the Korean War. He was very active and productive in his community, belonging to the Wilmington Rotary Club, the American Legion, President of the Harbor Mexican Chamber of Commerce, President of the Holy Family School Parents Club, board member of the LA and Harbor Hispanic Bicentennial Committee, and member of the Board of Directors for Bay Harbor Hospital for 35 years.
Carlos was best known for his high energy and on going jokes that he loved to tell. He loved to vacation all over the world and was a regular every summer with his family at Catalina Island, either fishing, eating or "girl watching". Above all he was an avid USC football fan and attended most home (and away) games since 1935.
"FIGHT ON Dad!!! We will always miss you," lovingly expressed his children.
On Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 at Green Hills Mortuary, the viewing was held from 12:00pm-5:00pm and then the Rosary began at 7:00pm.
