He was educated by private tutors until he was 10. He then entered Washington University where he spent 8 years. He went to Princeton College & graduated in 1879. He spent two years in law school in St. Louis and was admitted to the bar in 1881. For about 18 months he practiced law with his father, John. In about 1883-84 he became affiliated with the Tudor Iron Works which became Republis Iron & Steel Co. He stayed with them as an office manager until 1905. At that time, with his brother Edmund F. Wickham, they established a coal business named E.F. Wickham & Co. At his brohter's death in 1908 he became the owner, & in 1913 the business became known as Wickham Coal Co.

He was never married.
