James 'Bill' McKay
James William "Bill" McKay, 93, of Butler left a large hole in the lives of those who knew him when he passed away Sunday.
Born Dec. 10, 1916, in Washington, Pa., he was the son of the late Rexford L. McKay and Margaret Minor McKay.
Dr. McKay was a 1938 graduate of Waynesburg College with bachelor's degrees in English and Latin. He earned his master's degree in literature in 1948 and his doctoral degree in 1968, both from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. McKay was a lifelong educator whose career spanned seven decades. His journey began as a teacher at Trinity High School in 1938.
He left to serve with the U.S. Army in England, France and Germany during World War II.
After returning from the war, he taught at Slippery Rock High School before becoming a professor of English and secondary education at Slippery Rock University, a position he held from 1947 until 1982. He retired after 35 years at SRU, during which he was department chairman of secondary education and named Teacher Laureate by his students. He was the first treasurer of the college credit union, which he was instrumental in organizing and a charter member of the Pennsylvania Faculty Association, a forerunner of the Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties.
Following his time at SRU, Dr. McKay found retirement unsatisfying. He refused to not teach; and the following year, he joined the faculty of Butler County Community College, where he taught until 1991.
Aside from teaching, Dr. McKay loved his family, friends, traveling and playing and watching sports. He was the oldest living member of Saint Andrews United Presbyterian Church in Butler, where he served as an elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher and liturgist.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Mary Agnes Good McKay, whom he married March 21, 1970; his two sons, Timothy McKay of Mosely, Va., and Jonathan McKay and his wife, Natalie, of Butler; two daughters, Maureen Stephen of Belle Vernon and Susan Ostapchenko and her husband, Mike, of McKees Rocks; two daughters-in-law, Diana McKay of Pittsburgh and Angela McKay of Rice, Va.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Dr. McKay was preceded in death by a son, James William McKay III; a sister, Sarah McKay Wright; and a son-in-law, Scott Stephen.
