Allentown Morning Call, 15 Jul 1931

Happy and contented, Mrs. Elizabeth Walp, for many years a resident of Bethlehem, South Side, and the oldest person living at the Good Shepherd Home, at Allentown, celebrated her 94th birthday anniversary Tuesday, receiving greetings and well wishes from old-time friends in Bethlehem and elsewhere. One of the gifts she received Tuesday, and which pleased her immensely, was a life membership in the Women's Missionary Society of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Bethlehem from the Light Brigade of the church, Mrs. Charles A. Bramwell Jr., superintendent. The gift was presented to Mrs. Walp by Miss Emma D. Schall, whom Mrs. Walp taught while the head of the primary department of the former German Sunday School.

Mrs. Walp is beloved and was one of the charter members of St. Peter's Women's Missionary Society. Mrs. Walp, widow of William Walp, was born in Springfield Township, Bucks County, on July 14, 1837, a daugther of Samuel and Mary (Rodenbach) Klotz. She was baptized by the late Rev. C.P. Miller, in 1837, and confirmed in 1850 by the late Rev. Mr. Kemmerer. She reared six children of her own and three grandchildren. She has 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Her husband died thirty years ago.

Mrs. Walp has a keen memory, for she remembers her grandmother ninety-one years ago. She remembers distinctly of going to church with her father when she was 3 1/2 years old, and the kind of clothes she wore. She saw the first train going over the North Penn Branch of the Reading Railroad between Bethlehem and Philadelphia more than 70 years ago. Like Lincoln, she was born in a log cabin.

From the time she came to Bethlehem until she went to the Good Shepherd Home on March 1, 1928, she was a devoted and faithful member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. She was superintendent of the primary department of the Bible School for 48 years. The late Rev. Dr. Charles J. Cooper and the Rev. William F. Schoener and the Rev. Dr. J. O. Leibensperger were her pastors. She is also a charter member of the Women's Missionary Society of the Ministerium of Pennsylvania and Adjacent States, organized in St. Peter's Church, here, about 47 years ago, when the late Dr. Cooper was the pastor.

She spends her time in reading her Bible and her prayer book, as well as other books. It pleases her immensely when any of her Sunday School scholars of long ago pay her a visit. If her life is spared by July 14, 1937, she will reach her 100th birthday.
