Donald Gordon Bennett

Donald Gordon Bennett, 86 died peacefully in his home on June 18, 2011. He was born January 1, 1925 to L. Gordon and Ruth Bennett. A member of a long-time Springfield family, Don also spent his entire life in the area. He graduated Springfield (Central) High School in 1942, where he was a member of the National Honors Society. He was stationed in Europe during WWII (army), and later worked as a warrant officer in the National Guard. He married his high school sweetheart, Dawn Lynxwiler, in 1946. They had five children: Kurt Bennett (Venice, CA), Paul Bennett (Springfield), John Bennett and wife, LaVonne (Madison, WI), Becky Hollis and husband, Mike (Springfield), and Donna Allen (Springfield). Don finished his education at SMS, with a degree in history. He went on to work with his father in a family-owned sewing machine sales and service business, until his retirement in 1985.

Don is survived by his wife, Maybelle Newby-Bennett; five children; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dawn and two sisters.

He was a lifetime member of Grace and Schweitzer United Methodist Church. He will be deeply missed by his family and a host of friends, for his sharp mind and dry wit.

Per Don's request, no funeral service is planned. Friends can greet the family at in informal celebration of life at Schweitzer United Methodist Church Memorial Hall on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 from 4 to 6 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Schweitzer United Methodist Church, 2747 E. Sunshine, Springfield, Missouri 65804.
