Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Entered the Civil War as a Captain in the 6th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. When that unit was mustered out, he was given a commission in the 39th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and rose to its Lieutenant Colonel before being transferred to the 8th Indiana Volunteer Cavalry as its Colonel and commander. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services".
