DANVILLE, Vt. - Austin "Gus" Enos of Danville passed away at the Veterans Hospital in White River Junction early Friday morning, Sept. 24, 2010, at the age of 78.


He was born in Cambridge, Mass., on Aug. 12, 1932. His father, Ermand M. Enos, died just before Gus was born; his mother, Elizabeth (Clarke) Enos, remarried James Callahan.

In the extended Enos-Callahan family, he was predeceased by six brothers and sisters: Margaret (Enos) King, Phoebe Enos, Dicki Enos (KIA 1945), Molly (Enos) Hansen, James Callahan, and Jack Callahan.

Gus was a proud Korean War veteran, receiving an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Navy after four years of service.
Gus moved to Danville in 1991, after retiring with 32 years of service as an electrical engineer for Northrop Corp. While living in Norfolk, Mass., he served as a lieutenant and EMT on the Norfolk Fire Department, from 1972 to 1987. He also was a member of the Danville Zoning Board, Danville Town Lister, the Knights of Pythias, VFW Post 793 and the American Legion.

He truly loved his time reading with the first- through third-grade students at the Danville School which he did for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara (Timmins) Enos of Danville; four children: Stephen Enos and wife, Denise, of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; Nancy Lawton and husband, Edward, of Foxboro, Mass.; Patricia Sartelle and husband, David, of Danville; Edward Enos and wife, Kerry, of Denmark, Maine; 10 grandchildren: Leighann, Krystin, and Shaun Enos; Angela, Theresa, and Danielle Lawton; Jessica and Joseph Coutu; David and Joshua Enos; one great-grandson, Joseph Lawton; two sisters: Julia Callahan Craig and Ellen Callahan Nelson, both of Arkansas; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held next Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at 11 a.m., at the Danville Congregational Church. The Rev. Robert Sargent and the Rev. Douglas Carter will officiate the service. Committal services will be held at the Vermont Veteran's Cemetery in Randolph Monday, Oct. 4, at noon. Visiting hours will be held at the Sayles Funeral Home, Friday, Oct. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. A Knights of Pythias service will conclude the visiting hours at approximately 8 p.m.

Gus was a faithful member of the Knights of Pythias lodge in Danville and oversaw their educational scholarship fund. Anyone wishing to make a contribution in Gus's memory may send it to: Knights of Pythias, Scholarship Fund: c/o Toby Balivet, P O Box 114, Danville, VT 05828.
