Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served during the Civil War as a Captain and commander of Company A, 208th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery in action on April 2, 1865 at Petersburg, Virginia. His citation reads "Prevented a retreat of his regiment during the battle." He was a brevetted Lieutenant Colonel, US Volunteers for his service.
