Hunter B. Grant, 67, husband of Winifred Schley Grant and founder of the first Boy Scout troop in the United States in Paterson in 1908, died yesterday at his home, 129 North Walnut St.
Mr. Grant was born in Scotland, and was brought to this country as an infant. He attended the University of Maine, and was general secretary of the Rockport, ME YMCA before going to Paterson. While serving in Paterson at boys' work secretary of the Y, he established the first Scout troop, which preceded by two years the national Scout movement. In 1910, he established troop 1 of the Oranges.
Until his retirement in 1949, Mr. Grant served continuously as a scout official. He was an executive of the combined Orange Mountain Council of Scouts. He then had served longer than any other scout executive in the nation.
Mr. Grant was the first director of the Orange YMCA Camp Kittatinny, and served as an official at scholastic football and basketball games in North Jersey for many years.
A veteran of World War I, Mr. Grant was first chaplain of the East Orange post, American Legion. He also was a member of Hope Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, and the East Orange Kiwanis club.
Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Hunter B. Grant, Jr., of Westfield; a daughter, Mrs. Conrad de la Motte of Long Branch, a former resident of Rumson; three brothers, Thomas Grant of Port au Prince, Haiti; Ernest Grant of Mill Valley, Cal., and Maxwell Grant of Mamaroneck, NY and two sisters, Mrs. Leslie R. Stewart of Lincroft and Mrs. Richmond Quortrup of Plandome, LI.
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Gorny and Gorny funeral home, 303 Main St. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memorial Park, Clifton.
