John Mathis (member of Church of Christ) married Minnie Jones my great grandparents) and lived in Dexter, KY, but later moved to Springville, TN. Eight children were born to this union: Guss, Hardie, Coleman, James, Allie, Lucy (my grandmother), Vida, Vernell. They were hard working farmers, and helped those in need. Vernell, tells this story: "The Haglars had 2 sons, Ambus & Oneil both developed membranes croup which blocked airways. Mama stayed with the family 1 week helping to save Ambus' life. A local doctor was called to the farm. Ambus was gasping for air when the doctor cut the little boy's throat to open airflow, but soon died. Oneil caught the croup, doctors were called. Oneil was gasping for air when the same doctor grabbed his knife to cut an airway. The other doctor apparently had sense, stopped him & said, 'If you cut his throat, you will kill him.' The doctor continued, & Oneil soon died. The other doctor shouted, 'You've killed him too, now go tell them you just killed the other one.' "Papa & Mama Mathis also buried a young son, 21, Hardie, who was working the railroad in Washington. Hardie lifted heavy equipment, & asked the foreman for help. Foreman said, "Hold on, Shorty, I'm getting you help." It was too late. Shorty said he felt something pop in his side which was a hernia that turned to gangrene. He died days later. Vernell, said, "It liked to have killed our poor Mama when Shorty was buried. We had to hold her up at the cemetery." Not long after, at the age of 63, Mama Mathis died from heart dropsy. Papa Mathis had hardening of arteries & often uncontrollable. Lucy, cared for her Papa while tending to her own family.
