Mary was the second of four daughters of Christian Gingrich Kurtz & Hannah Jane Puterbaugh. She was named after her maternal grandmother, Mary (Lloyd) Puterbaugh. Mary and her sisters, Winnie, Fay, and Verna, were all schoolteachers before they married. They received their teaching diplomas at Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, Iowa (now the University of Northern Iowa).

Fred is buried in Riverside Cemetery beside his first wife Susie (1890-1923), whom he married 18 Feb 1914 in Marshall County, Iowa.
