Mary was the second of four daughters of Christian Gingrich Kurtz & Hannah Jane Puterbaugh. She was named after her maternal grandmother, Mary (Lloyd) Puterbaugh. Mary and her sisters, Winnie, Fay, and Verna, were all schoolteachers before they married. They received their teaching diplomas at Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, Iowa (now the University of Northern Iowa).

Mary married first on 3 March 1914 in Marshall County, Iowa, to Frank Thomas Ralls, son of Joseph Ralls & Permilia Arney. Frank was born August 6, 1885 and died June 6, 1923. Mary married second in 1931 to Fred Thirlby (1885-1950). No children by either marriage; Mary had a stepdaughter Margaret by her second marriage. Fred is buried in Riverside Cemetery beside his first wife Susie (1890-1923), whom he married 18 Feb 1914 in Marshall County, Iowa. The son of Thomas & Mary Thirby, Fred, 32, registered for the military draft on 12 September 1918; he was medium height, medium build, blue eyes, light brown hair; occupation: farmer.

Mary is buried beside her first husband, Frank. His September 12, 1918 registration for the military draft lists him as medium height, stout build, blue eyes, and brown hair; occupation: farmer.
