Raymond W. Starostka was born November 27, 1923 in Silver Creek, Ne. to Walter John and Victoria Theresa (Czapla) Starostka. He graduated from Silver Creek High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1943 - 1946 where he received the Bronze Star, Soldiers Medal, and two Combat Medals. Ray retired from the Army Reserve at the rank of Lt. Colonel. He graduated from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln in 1947 and received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin in 1950. On June 6, 1951 he married Kathleen Kennedy at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Evansville, Wisconsin. He lived in Maryland where he worked for the U.S.D.A. Agricultural Research Center and the W.R. Grace Company. He also lived in Chicago, Illinois where he worked for I.M.C. before moving back to Silver Creek in 1968 where he established Agroservice, Inc. He was a member of the Silver Creek American Legion, St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Knights Of Columbus, American Society of Agronomy, and the Soil Science Society of America.
