Author. He wrote on the subjects of naval history, to the history of Boston, Massachusetts. He was director of the Boston Athenaeum Library from 1946 to 1973. He later taught at the Peabody Museum, and Harvard University, from 1951 to 1972. He also was a trustee of Monticello, the home of President Thomas Jefferson, until his death in 1978. He was the author of, "Boston: A Topographical History" (1968), "Massachusetts: A Pictorial History" (1976), "Dumbarton Oaks: The History Of A Georgetown House And Garden (1800-1966)" (1967), and "Independent Historical Societies" (1962), among many others.
