He married Elizabeth Ann Rudacille on December 23, 1851.

1) George Samuel Updike (1852-1890)m. Sarah Margaret Gore
2) Laura Ellen Updike (1854-1914) m.Henry Clay Fox, James William Spaid, and A. J. Knight
3) Ann Mariah Updike (1856-1882) m. Benjamin Swartz
4) Mary Frances Updike (1859-1945) m. James Elliott Cook
5) Julia Amanda Updike (1861-1933) m. George Thomas Updike son of George Washington Updike and Mary Eveline Baggarly Updike.
6) John Israel (1864-1882) died of typhoid fever
7) Rachel Alice (1866-1949) m. Henry Ashby Updike,son of Amon and Louise Baggarly Updike, Amon and Rachel's father, John Jackson were brothers.
8) William Harvey (1868-1868) twins died at birth
9) James Garvey (1868-1868) twins died at birth
10) Canzada Virginia (1869-1943) m.John Jeremiah Dunlap son of John and Elizabeth Dunlap of Timber Ridge, VA and is buried in Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, VA.
11) Joseph Randolph Updike (1873-1939) m. Carrie Elizabeth Thompson daughter of Elliot Duncan Thompson and Sarah Elizabeth Lawrence Thompson.
