Lucy Joan Smith Colby was born on May 23, 1928, in Sibley, Osceola County, Iowa, to Paul Chandler Smith and Leah Jane Johnson Smith. Since her father published several newspapers Lucy lived in George and Canton, South Dakota, before moving to Rock Rapids at about the age of nine.

She graduated from Wilson High School in Rock Rapids with the Class of 1946 and attended the University of South Dakota at Vermillion where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority.

On March 26, 1948, Lucy married Ben A. Colby Jr. of Rock Rapids. In March of 1950 a daughter, Paula Jane, was added to their family.

Family history was always important to Lucy and she instilled this value in her daughter and grandchildren. In her search for family history, Lucy and Ben traveled widely, investigating family history, locating ancestral graves, and researching family stories. Lucy followed both of her grandmothers and her mother as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution—a tradition that has been continued by her daughter and both of her granddaughters.

Lucy was especially proud of Rock Rapids and her family's heritage in the Lyon County Reporter. The Smiths celebrated their 100th year publishing the Reporter in 1988. That same year, she and Ben were co recipients of the Master Editor award given by the Iowa Press Association. She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood Chapter AI.

Travel was one of Lucy's favorite hobbies. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, daughter, and son-in-law. In 1995, Lucy and Paula began traveling together yearly and always had an adventure waiting. Trips were always the subject for memories and laughs in later years.

Knitting, sewing, and needlework were pastimes at which Lucy excelled. With the arrival of grandchildren and then great-grandchildren, quilting became her passion. She continued to create beautiful quilts for her descendants as long as she was able.

In 2004, Lucy and Ben moved to Presque Isle, Maine, to be with their daughter and her family. She passed away on June 28,
2011.

She is survived by a daughter, Paula and son- in -law Sam, two granddaughters, Leah and Samantha, and five great- grandchildren who loved their GG.
