Donald Lloyd Craig, 79, of San Diego, died of cancer June 5, 2008, at the VA Hospital in La Jolla. Born and raised in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, he served as a sonar man in the Navy during the Korean War before finding work in the insurance and real estate business in San Diego. He married Mildred Wellington in 1954 and bought a home in National City. Together they were active in the Southeast United Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir and made many wonderful friends. Don was active in Boy Scouts where he served as the District Commissioner of the San Diego Council. He was also honored as a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award in 1976. He was a man of many talents including singing and public speaking. More than anything else, however, he excelled at telling stories (some of which were even true) and laughing (especially at himself). The measure of his life was not so much what he did or when he did it as how he did it. He made people laugh and always played the rogue. No one loved his kids or grandchildren more than Don. For a man of his vintage, he was exceptionally free with the words, "I love you." He will be sorely missed by those who loved him as well as those who knew him only casually. Those who didn't have the unique experience of his company don't know what they missed. He is survived by his three sons, Michael of Orlando, William of Ramona and Richard of San Jose, as well as his grandchildren Melanie Havey, Wes Craig and Nathan Craig. The family would like to thank the medical staff of the VA Medical Center for taking such excellent care of Don during his illness. At his request, no funeral services will be held. After interment at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, a party will be held in his honor where many toasts will be hoisted followed by much laughter and a few tears.
