Fred ("Fritz") had run away from home, and Marie (sometimes spelled Maria and nicknamed "Minna" or "Mary")came with him.
Fred was born in Mecklenburg, Germany and was one of 5 children. One sister was a seamstress, one brother a postmaster, another brother a high standing officer in the German army, and the other is unknown. His parents are unknown also, at this time.
Minna was born in Dessin, Mecklenberg Schwerin, Germany and was one of 7 children. Her family lived in a sort of communal with other families while they worked for "big farming". They lived in small house-type places, all under one roof, and each family had their part.
Minna's father, Joachim Heinrich Christian Cords, was a "broom man" who also made shoes.
Minna was sick the whole boat trip, which took two weeks, but Fred had a great time! After their arrival in the US, they were married December 22, 1883 in Yutan, Nebraska. However, Minna was so homesick for her family, they sent for her mother and father. Later, all the Cords brothers and sisters followed.
