HISTORY of FRANK W. and TILLIE (CHRISTIANSEN) BLAICH
Morton Prairie Roots 1776-1976; Page 529

Frank William Blaich was born October 5, 1873 in Cleveland, Ohio to John A. and Anna Hasse Blaich. He came with his parents and five brothers and sisters to Mandan, North Dakota in 1885. His parents took up a Homestead Northwest of Mandan near the small railroad town of Sweet Briar.

In 1901 he married Tillie Christiansen, born October 7, 1876, daughter of Sone Christianson, of rural Mandan. They built their first home on a quarter section that Frank had homesteaded next to his father's Homestead. To them were born five children, John, Edna, Evelyn, Ernest and Leonard.

He entered into partnership with a few neighbors to thresh grain. A rig was bought in the venture started. One night the rig burned and that ended that. Tillie did her bit to help the family finances by purchasing an incubator and hatching chickens. The big Plymouth Rocks that resulted from these hatchlings were a thing to behold.

They had their share of Prairie fire scares. On 20 March in 1910, Tillie was home alone with four small children, Ernest less than one year old, a big Prairie fire was sighted coming straight for their home. She managed with the help of John the oldest, eight years old, to get a horse harnessed and hitched to a single plow and of their plowing many furrows (called flower gardens) around the building and this way saving themselves.

Frank and Tillie were great fans of Will Rogers and never missing his movies when they played at Mandan.

Tillie passed away at the age of 61 in April 1937 and is buried at the Mandan Union Cemetery. Frank passed away at the age of 65 a year and a day later in April 1938.
