Flagstaff, AZ Police Officer Jeff Moritz was killed on June 21, 2000 after answering a noise disturbance call in a south Flagstaff neighborhood. After pulling the car over, the driver pulled a gun and fired five shots. Although Officer Moritz was wearing a bullet proof vest, he was struck in the shoulder, severing an artery.
Officer Moritz was the first and remains the only Flagstaff police officer killed in the line of duty.
He left behind a wife and young son. The day he died, his wife found out she was pregnant with their second child.
Eric Clark, the man who shot Officer Moritz was found guilty of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

He was cremated, and his ashes were scattered over the San Francisco Peaks, north of Flagstaff.
