Lucy Rebenitsch, 89, Fort Rice, passed away June 20, 2009, in a Bismarck Hospital.

Mass of Christian burial was held on June 24, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Mandan, with Fr. Patrick Shumacher and Fr. Ken Phillips officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fort Rice.

Lucy was born to Frank and Mary (Brigl) Miller in St. Anthony, on Sept. 3, 1919, the 10th of 12 children. At age 12 her father died, leaving her to help her mother and siblings operate a small farm through the depression. She attended the high school convent school at Garrison. At age 17, Lucy left home with $20 in her pocket to attend Dickinson State College in pursuit of her dream of teaching.

After one year she received a teaching certificate and began teaching at an eight grade, one-room school in rural North Dakota. She continued her studies and eventually received a bachelor of science degree in education from the University of Mary. Lucy began her long career teaching in several one-room rural schools. She later taught elementary and junior high in Almont, Browning, Mont., Huff and Fort Rice, as well as public and parochial schools in Bismarck and Mandan. She also taught special education to homebound students and was beloved by her students.

On Feb. 25, 1946, she married Leonard Rebenitsch of Fort Rice. During the first year of their marriage, the couple lived in a log cabin along the Missouri River at Fort Rice until they purchased a small farm near Fort Rice.

In 1953, after multiple tornadoes struck the area, Leonard and Lucy moved to Bismarck to raise their family. They returned to the ranch in 1970, but Lucy kept teaching until retiring in 1982. However, she continued to provide home schooling until the age of 80. Lucy enjoyed gardening and quilting. After retirement, she organized the Fort Rice Quilting Club, which created and donated many quilts to charity, family and friends.

Lucy and Leonard were married for 57 years until Leonard passed away in 2003.

Lucy is survived by her five children, Mary Ellen Rebenitsch, Mandan, Karen (Leo) Reisenauer, St. Anthony, Lenore (Matt) Kuntz, Ft Rice, Ron (Stephanie) Rebenitsch, Bismarck and Dale (Audrey) Rebenitsch, Ft Rice; many grandchildren; great-grand-children; one sister, Theresa Mann; one sister-in-law, Hildegard Miller; and numerous nieces and nephews.
