James Mack Obit
A gloom was cast over our city last Thursday when the news was spread of the death of one of our old settlers and citizens, Mr. James Mack, who was taken seriously sick a week previous to his death. Mr. Mack had been quite ill several times before and has been up and down for the past year but death relieved his pains on March 24th. The funeral sermonies were performed on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the M.E. church, where Rev. J.W.Culvert preached an interesting sermon and many followed his remains to the Marquette Cemetery where he was placed to eternal rest.
James Mack was born in Chattaraugus County, New York, September 18th 1821, he grew into manhood in Indiana and migrated to Wisconsin in 1844 where he was married in 1850 to C.J. Hill. Upon the breaking out of the war he enlisted in the 10th Wisconsin Light Battery and fought for his country's defense and after the war returned to his family and soon after moved to Minnesota. In 1876 he came to Kansas and settled in Rice county where he lived for about 7 years. He then came to Marquette, purchased land and staid here until 1891 when he went to North Dakota on a visit, at which place he listened to theSavior's call and was baptized in the Advent church. He came back to Marquette in 1894 with his family and lived on his place just north of town. At his death he was 76 years, 7 months and 6 days old. Mr. Mack was a good, kind hearted man, loved and cherished by all who knew him and leaves a loving wife, 7 children and many grandchildren to mourn his death. The entire community sympathize with the bereaved ones in mourning the loss of husband and father so dear to them
