US Congressman. Born in Churchville, New York, he trained as a lawyer before the outbreak of the conflict, and served during the Civil War as a First Lieutenant in Company E, 27th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He participated in the July 21, 1861 First Battle of Bull Run, where he received wounds severe enough to force his mustering out of active service. Rising to prominence in the new York law community, he served in the New York State Legislature and State Senate before he was elected as a Republican to represent New York's 30th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from March 4, 1885 to March 3, 1891. He passed away in Washington, DC in 1902.
