March 22, 2011 from The Oregonian, Portland Oregon- Holt, Bernadine S. 92 10/13/1918 03/13/2011 Bernadine Shore Holt peacefully passed away in Portland. She was 92. She was the younger of two children born to Vida Hazel (Belshaw) Shore and Walter W. Shore in Spokane. Bernie graduated from West High School in Minneapolis. She attended Washington State College where she was a member of the Spurs honorary; Fish Fans, a synchronized swim team; and Pi Beta Phi sorority. She met her future husband, Richard "Dick" Holt while they were both working for United Airlines in Portland. They married in Seattle in 1941. They had three children, Robert, Mary and Thomas. Bernie is survived by her sons, Rob and Tom; their wives, Marie and Eileen; grandchildren, Brian and Allison; and Brian's wife, Kelly. She was preceded in death by her brother, daughter, and husband. Bernie worked as a mother and homemaker while her children were in school. She returned to the professional world becoming involved in the creation of Mount Hood Community College and, later, as the administrative assistant to its first president, Earl Klapstein. Bernie and her family shared a deep love for skiing and the outdoors. In the early '60s Dick built a cabin in Government Camp which was called "Holt's Hut." The whole family loved spending time on the mountain. Bernie was proud of her advanced lifesaving and water safety certification and the time she spent as an adapted aquatics instructor for kids with disabilities. In her retired years, Bernie's passion for an active lifestyle and skiing led her to join the "Over the Hill Gang," a ski club for seniors with whom she traveled to many ski areas in the West. Bernie continued skiing into her early 80s. She also was part of the "Gang of Four," four close women friends, all about the same age. They did everything together including trips to Europe, Africa, China, and Australia. Bernie was the last surviving member of that group. The joy of Mom's life were her grandchildren. Brian and Allison spent many happy days with Grandma Bernie. Bernie also had tragedy and sadness during her life but she always faced it with a positive "can do" attitude. We will miss you Mom and love you very much. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 24, 2011, in Rose City Park United Methodist Church.
