He was a Marine enlisted man who was a pilot in WWII. He received an officer's commission in September, 1943 as a 2nd Lt. flying anti-submarine and dive-bombing aviator roles in the Solomon Island campaigns. After the war, he attended the Marine Air-Infantry School at Quantico, VA. In Korea, he was a forward air controller, calling in Marine air support of ground troops. He played a key role in the disastrous Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, November 27 -December 2, 1950. He was instrumental in removing wounded soldiers of the 7th Infantry Division to which he was attached, was captured briefly by the Chinese forces, escaped, and made it to US Marine lines.
