SMITH, Hiawatha "Smitty". 80, a resident of Wetumpka, AL passed away in a local hospital on Thursday, March 26, 2009 after a brief illness. Sergeant Major Hiawatha Smith (retired) faithfully served his country in the United States Army for more than 30 years. During the Korea Conflict he was a member of the Military Police Company that was responsible for the exchange of prisoners of the war at the Demilitarized Zone. The majority of his military career was spent in recruiting of fellow soldiers. After his military career, Mr. Smith worked 15 years civil service and raised Angus Cattle until his death.

Funeral services will be Monday, March 30, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Thelma Baptist Church with Rev. Doug Chappelle officiating. Interment will be in Alabama Heritage Cemetery with full Military Honors. Gassett Funeral Home of Wetumpka directing.

Mr. Smith is preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Smith, his parents, Hayden and Pinkie Smith, his son, Dwight Smith, grandson, Alan Hutto; 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred (Millie) Smith, Wetumpka, AL; son, Greg Smith, Montgomery, AL; daughter, Leisa (Don) Ball, Montgomery, AL; sisters, Ruth Gillis, Montgomery, AL, Peggy Finney, Oceanside, CA and Merle Whitmore, Miami, FL; 5 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 step daughters, 5 step grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.
