Lionel G. Lavoie, 78, of Sparrows Point I, Hardig Road, Warwick, died May 30, 2011 at Kent Hospital, under the wonderful care of the CCU and Hospice. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Irene (Chartier) Lavoie.

Born in West Warwick to Omer and Veronique (Ritchotte) Lavoie, Lionel lived in a home that he built with his brother Arthur in Greene, R.I. for 30 years. He also resided in Ocala and Lady Lake, Fla. for several years before settling back in Rhode Island.

Lionel served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Lionel was a volunteer firefighter for the West Warwick Fire Department for 14 years and 21 years for the Western Coventry (Summit) Fire District, part of that time as deputy chief.

As a young man, Lionel dabbled in playing the drums for a fife and drum corps. He owned and operated a sporting goods shop with his wife in the early 1960s. An avid outdoorsman, Lionel belonged to the Pawtuxet Valley Rifle Club and enjoyed boating and slalom skiing with family and friends on Lake Tiogue.

For most of Lionel's working career he was employed in the textile industry. He worked for the Leesona Corp. in Warwick as a manager of the demonstration laboratory. He was instrumental in overseeing and participating in textile machinery trade shows throughout the country and in Paris, France. Lionel also worked in human services as a production manager for Community Workshop and a direct support staff for the J. Arthur Trudeau Memorial Center.
