Oran W. Bill Schemmel 84, of Nokomis, Florida, passed away on May 14, 2011 at the Tidewell Hospice Center in Venice, Florida, after a long and courageous battle.

Bill was born in Los Angeles, California on January 12, 1927, the second of four children born to Harry and Hazel Schemmel. He graduated from Inwood High School, Inwood, Iowa, in 1945.

He enlisted in the US Army in March, 1945, rose to the rank of sergeant, and served as a surgical technician with the 1389th Army Air Force Base Unit in Bermuda. He was honorably discharged on November 30, 1946.

He founded the Inwood Egg Market in 1949, a business he owned and operated for 16 years. In 1965, he moved his family to Madison, South Dakota, and joined Triple F Feed Company, where he worked until 1978. He then worked out of Davenport, Iowa for the Peterson and Barblyn Furniture Companies, where he worked until his retirement in 2002.

He married Shirlee Buchmeyer of Davenport, Iowa on May 26, 1951 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Nine children were born to Bill and Shirlee; Heidi Ann (April 30, 1952), Jeffrey William (February 19, 1954), Jane and Jill (twins born and passed February 28, 1956), Holly Geralyn (March 27, 1958), Jerry Harold (November 26, 1959), Jed Richard (May 20, 1961), Jason Edward (July 17, 1963), and Joel Vincent (May 15, 1965).

Bill was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, and so proud of his seven surviving children, fifteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Daughter Heidi was the first-ever college graduate in the Schemmel family.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, a talented gunsmith/gun collector, and a gifted craftsman, known for his ability to build, repair, remodel, and beautify almost anything. He was particularly proud of his military service during World War II and after. He enjoyed sports, and had a special love for baseball, which he played and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play. He loved to have fun, and everyone he knew loved to have fun with him.

Bill is survived by his wife Shirlee, children Heidi (Doug) Miller of Tucson, Arizona, Jeff (Lori) of Overland Park, Kansas, Holly (Bob) Lanzner of Cumming, Georgia, Jerry (Diane) of Littleton, Colorado, Jed (Lynn) of Berlin, New Jersey, Jason (Debi) of Cary, North Carolina, and Joel (Toni) of Sarasota, Florida, grandchildren Eric (Paula) Bench (34), Alison Bench (31), Justin (Carrie) Schemmel (31), Jonathan Schemmel (28), Nicholas Lanzner (28), Emily Lanzner (25), Derrick Schemmel (21), Brian Schemmel (19), Maggie Schemmel (18), Kyra Schemmel (14), Jack Schemmel (13), Ryan Schemmel (12), Jamie Schemmel (11), Josh Schemmel (11), and Jacob Schemmel (9), great grandchildren Denton Bench (5) and Jackson Schemmel (2), brother Richard (Eleanor) Schemmel of Inwood, Iowa, and sister Betty Bol of Glenwood, Minnesota. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Bill's name to Tidewell Hospice, Inc., 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Florida.
