Carmelina was the daughter of Salvatore and Theresa (Manzo) D'Anna. She grew up in Sicily, spending her early years working as a seamstress. She married Giovanni (John) Sberna on December 18, 1920. The couple chose to leave Italy in 1921, and sailed to the United States, landing at Ellis Island. As with thousands of others during that period, they were looking to start a new life in the great U.S.A. They settled in Bellevue, a small town in upper central Ohio. Carmelina chose not to work and remained a housewife her entire life. She and John raised four children. She was a good mother, and a loving grandmother (Nani) to her nine grandchildren. Her last few years were spent in a nursing facility, where she quietly passed away, surrounded by family, at the age of 82.
