Longtime Lincoln County resident, Benny Coker, age 81, peacefully passed away of heart failure in Alto, NM on January 19, 2009.
Benny had spent much of his life in Capitan, NM owning and operating the Rusty Anchor Bar, and was a local politician in the area.
Benny was born in Carter, OK on October 4, 1927.
Benny grew up in Tishomingo, OK and served in the Korean War.
After being released from the service, he worked for Shell Oil Company in and around Hobbs, NM and Midland, TX.
Benny moved to Lincoln County in the early 1970s and continued to reside there until his death.
Benny was a successful racehorse owner and an avid sports fan.
Benny played golf, hunted, bowled and enjoyed rooting for his favorite football teams, the Denver Broncos and Oklahoma Sooners.
Benny felt his best forte was being a liaison to put people together to make good things happen. Benny was successful in that regard in business and politics, usually behind the scene and without receiving much credit.
Benny Coker is survived by his sister, Lillie Hoedebeck of San Diego, CA, his brother, Hulen Coker of El Cajon, CA, his roommate and closest friend of 22 years, Craig Eikleberry of Alto, NM and many beloved nephews, nieces, cousins and in-laws. Benny had thousands of friends whose lives he touched and enriched.
Benny was preceded in death by his parents, Jess and Sarah Coker, his brother, Jesse "Buddy" Coker all of Tishomingo, OK and his brother Cecil Coker of Lovington, NM.
