Feb. 3, 1927
Charles Wesley McElravy, a veteran of the Civil War, died at 6:30 o’clock Friday evening at his home in Franklin after a brief illness.
Born on March 20, 1840, Mr. McElravy would have been 87 his next birthday.
When President Lincoln called for volunteers in ‘61, he enlisted in the 155th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, Humphrey’s division, Alabaugh’s brigade, Company H, and was in action in the battle of Fredericksburg, South Mountain, and Antietam, White House Landing, St. Mary’s Church, Trevillian Station, Hatchers Run, and Stony Creek Station.
Serving for a time with Battery I, First regiment, he re-enlisted in the Fourth Cavalry, Gregg’s Division, and Company H for “luck.” At the close of the war he was mustered out a corporal.
Married in 1866 to Miss Lucy Clugh, the couple celebrated their 60th anniversary on May 29, 1926. To this union were born four sons and six daughters, all of whom, with the widow, survive except one son, who died in infancy.
The surviving children are as follows: Will McElravy, and Bird McElravy, Sligo; Guy McElravy, Washington State; Mrs. Cora Shirey, Johnetta; Mrs. Nannia Kahle, Clarion; Mrs. Jessie Mohney, Painesville, Ohio; Misses Laura, Mamie and Nell, all of Franklin. Mr. McElravy also left 21 grandsons, 10 granddaughters; 13 great-grandsons and 6 great-granddaughters.
Private services were conducted at the home Monday morning at _:30 o’clock by Rev. M. B. Miller of the Franklin U. M. Church, after which the body was taken to Churchville and there laid to rest. Mr. McElravy was of a genial, friendly disposition, and was well liked as attested by the host of friends who called at the home and by the beautiful floral tributes. He was well known throughout Forest and Clarion Counties, having spent the most of his long life in these places.
