Gen. Matthias Ogden was the son of Robert Ogden 1716 - 1787 and Phebe (Hatfield) Ogden 1720 - 1796. He took an early and a decided part in the late contest with Great Britain. He joined the army at Cambridge, and such was his zeal and resolution, that he accompanied Arnold in penetrating through the wilderness to Canada. He was engaged in the attack upon Quebec and was carried wounded from the place of engagement. On his return from this expedition he was appointed to the command of a regiment,
in which station he continued until the conclusion
of the war. When peace took place he was honoured by Congress with a commission of Brigadier-general. He died at Elizabeth-town, New-Jersey, March 31, 1791. He was distinguished for his liberality and philanthropy.

Biography by Johnnie Ogden.

Inscription on stone below:

"In him were united those various virtues of the Soldier the Patriot and the Friend which endear men to society. Distress failed not to find relief in his bounty. Unfortunate merit a refuge in his generosity. If manly sense and dignity of mind, If social virtues lib'ral and refin'd, Nipp'd in their bloom deserve compassion's tears, Then reader Weep, for Ogden's dust lies here. Weed his grave clean ye men of genius, for he was your kinsman. Tread lightly on his ashes ye men of feeling, for he was your brother."
