Sebastian was born in Bombach, Baden and immigrated to the US in 1855, landing in New Orleans and traveling upriver to Hermann, Missouri. He was the son of Paul Steiger and Anna Maria Kürer. After arriving in the US, he initially worked as a vine dresser, and later was a farmer. He was the father of 13 children.
