Emmanuel was born to Jens Christian and Ane Kathrine Marie Pedersen Elkjaer of Denmark. Besides Emmanuel they had four other children: Victor Christian, Lena Marie, married Rudolph Nodgaard, Carl Hans Peter and Anfelt S. In 1880 Jens immigrated to America where he married Ane and settled in Omaha, Nebraska.

Emmanuel married Dortha Morford, they had no children. Possibly married circa 1910.

On June 5, 1917 Emmanuel registered for World War I. At the time he was married and living at 2816 Pinkney, Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska. His occupation was Trouble Call for Bell Telephone Company. Emmanuel was tall and slender with gray eyes and dark brown hair.

In 1958 and/or 1962 the couple resided in Glendale, Los Angeles, California.
