HENRY W. PUTNAM WILLS BENNINGTON HOSPITAL FORTUNE
Battle Monument and Historical Association and Bennington College Remembered by Co-founder
Specific bequests of $3,000,000 to Putnam Memorial Hospital at Bennington, Vt., $100,000 to the Bennington Battle Monument and Historical Association and $50,000 to Bennington College for Women are included in the will of Henry W. Putnam, New York wire and glass manufacturer who died March 30 in Miami, Fla.
According to the Associated Press, the will filed in New York yesterday also made bequests to three Bennington men who had been employed by the manufacturer. The total amount bequeathed to individuals and institutions was $5,535,000.
To Be Endowment
It was stated at Bennington last night that the $3,000,000 bequest to the Henry W. Putnam Memorial Hospital undoubtedly would be in the form of an endowment for the institution's perpetuation. The hospital is owned by the village of Bennington, it was pointed out, although it was built by Mr. Putnam and his father, Henry W. Putnam, Sr. who died in 1915.
The waterworks system at Bennington owned by the elder Mr. Putnam was the original foundation for the hospital, the water system being given to the village and the income of approximately $15,000 a year being devoted to hospital purposes. The second Mr. Putnam, who died last month at the age of 73, continued his father's benefactions, providing two additions to the building, a nurses' home and a maids' home in addition to other plant facilities. The Putnams are estimated to have expended approximately $2,000,000 in building the hospital an in addition, made up the hospital's deficits, ranging between $30,000 and $60,000 a year. To eliminate the possibility of imposing the hospital's upkeep on the village, which holds title to the property, it was said last night that it was probable the $3,000,000 bequest would be in the form of an endowment.
Bequest To Employees
Among Mr. Putnam's employees, bequest of $7,200 to Clarence H. Wood of Bennington; $3,588 each to Jesse O. Dwyer and Frederick Buck, both of Bennington, and $1,800 to Lottie E. Johnson of San Diego, Cal. were made.
Still another bequest of $25,000 was given the Tuskegee, Alabama, Normal Industrial Institute.
In addition to the specific bequests, Mr. Putnam created a residuary trust of an undetermined amount in which Harvard, Yale and Princeton will share equally after the death of four cousins who will draw interest from it for life.
The manufacturer, who was unmarried, bequeathed $300,000 each additional to the four cousins, Anna R. and Amy Putnam of San Diego, Cal., Helen C. Putnam of Providence, R.I., and Cora Putnam Hale of Elizabethtown.
He also left $500,000 to Jessie E. Foot of Greenwich, Conn., and $200,000 to Cecil A. Lennan of Tenafly, N.J., his confidential secretary for 30 years.
