Benneville Ruth was drafted into service on July 10th 1863 in Philadelphia and placed in Company I ,of The 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers. He served there until his capture in Virginia at the Battle of Cold Harbor on June 1st 1864. He was taken to Andersonville Prison (Camp Sumter).While there at Andersonville Benneville was in Mess 5 Section 2 of the Camp. On September 8th 1864, the 23rd Pennsylvania was mustered out of service and the men were transferred to the 82nd PA Volunteers. Without ever knowing it and ill by that time Benneville was in the 82nd PA. He died there on November 16th 1864 of Scorbutus and is buried in the National Cemetery. His muster out record shows him in the 82nd though he never served as a part of the unit.
