Eldest son of James and Lucy Bolton, he was baptized November 2, 1800 at Prince George's Anglican Parish in Rockville, Montgomery County, Maryland. As an orphan he was apprenticed on February 7, 1814 to David Allison of Bullitt County, Kentucky who was to provide instruction in farming along with his general education. John married on January 10, 1822 in Bullitt County to Katharine Roby, sister of Elizabeth Roby Wilhite (1785-1863) and Otha Roby (c.1796-1881). He married his second wife, Sarah Rosenbach, on May 30, 1865 at St Paul's Evangelical Church in Louisville, but was divorced shortly after on November 6, 1865, and married his third wife, Mrs. Annie Raman, on December 15, 1881 in Bullitt County.
His mother Lucy was first married to Robert Shaw, by whom she was the mother of James Pratt Shaw, who was baptized in the same church as J.B.B. on July 5, 1795. She married James Bolton on November 23, 1799 in Montgomery County, Maryland, and they were enumerated in the 1800 census there with two young males, living adjacent to Basil Beall and near to David Allison and Basil Prather. A daughter Elizabeth Bailey Bolton was born on Sept. 15, 1804 and baptized in the same church as her brothers on October 21, 1804. Lucy must have died shortly after this because James married again on July 6, 1805 in Bullitt County, Kentucky to Lucy Spencer, by whom he had at least eight children. The daughter Elizabeth Bailey Bolton married Allen Rouse in Bullitt County on April 25, 1822, and their children included David A Rouse and Elizabeth Ann Rouse Krippendorf.
