She and her brother Squire Bell (c.1830-1863) were children of James Bell who died at an early age, leaving Squire to be raised in the household of his uncle and aunt, William W. Bell (1808-1859) and Eliza Ash Bell (1809-1880). This contradicts Mary Bell Bolton's death certificate which lists her father as Jacob Bell, but after two decades of exhaustive research on this family I'm certain of my conclusion. Jacob Bell was her first cousin and the last direct male descendant of their grandfather Bell.

She was a granddaughter of John Bell (d. 1811) and Elizabeth Connell, who were married in Nelson County, Kentucky, Oct. 1803. Her grandmother married her second husband Jacob Raymond in Nelson County, Kentucky, Apr. 21, 1822, and they lived on Coxes Creek in Bullitt County, Kentucky. The deaths while still relatively young of three successive generations of the Bell male line have made it a difficult one to untangle.
