While in Virginia, he met his wife of 43 years, Sarah Louise Knight, they were wed on August 19, 1953. They had one son Grady L. Evans, born October 5, 1963. On December 16, 1971, 30 years to the day that he first stepped onto Nolfolk Navel Shipyard, Leonard retired, packed the family and belongings and moved home to Fayette.
Upon returning to Fayette he worked at the Fayette Housing Authority for several years and worked a huge garden at home with his family.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Grady Evans, Chester Perry Evans, Sr, and one sister Lona Mae Evans Glaze. He is survived by his wife Sarah Louise Knight Evans, son Grady L. Evans and wife Glenda, one step-grandson Jonathon Earley, one sister Wilma Inez Evans Gibson, a special cousin James Cullen Evans, Jr and a host of other family and friends. He was laid to rest at Fayette Memorial Gardens in Fayette, AL. Nelson Funeral Home of Fayette officiated.
